Allen Beaulieu became Prince’s personal photographer at just 28-years-old. His collaboration with Prince helped to create an image that was edgy, sexy and on the verge of being obscene.
Beaulieu shot three album covers for Prince, which included; Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. He also traveled with Prince and documented his first national tour with Rick James and Teena Marie.
His relationship with the artist led to album covers for Vanity 6, and The Time. He also worked with Grammy Award-winning producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at Flyte Tyme studios in Minneapolis. A photo he shot of Jam and Lewis at Flyte Tyme was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.
This early success catapulted Beaulieu’s career and after relocating to New York, to pursue his dream of becoming a fashion photographer he hooked up with Rolling Stone Magazine. Beaulieu told Mpls-Sound News, “I shot Ozzie Osborne, Tracie Chapman, Natalie Merchant, Billy Joel and Tina Turner. You name um, and I shot pretty much all of those that came after that.”
Allen holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and he is still creating at his studio in Minneapolis.
